Grandmaster Abe Kamahoahoa

Grandmaster Abe Kamahoahoa

Brother Abraham Kamahoahoa A mountain of a man with a heart to match, he was a resident of Waianae. Born in 1924, there is a romantic type story told of the day when he was born on the Hawaiian waters, as his parents were on route from the Big Island to Oahu. At an early age his speech and hearing was impaired permanently. But this handicap never defeated him because he stood out beyond the average person due to his fortitude and accomplishments.

He was a successful and beloved man with his family and many, many friends. He was proficient and devoted to the Martial Arts, rising to chief instructor and 8th degree black belt. He was a man with brutal strength. He started his martial arts training with Professor Henry Okazaki in Judo, and at the same time weight lifting under Harold Sakata (Tosh Togo of Odd Job fame) a silver medallist of the Olympics. He was in amateur boxing (City Wide Boxing Club with Pat Fukuda) and amateur wrestling (AAU), before his Kenpo Karate training from Professor William K. S. Chow. He was with the Professor for 20 continuous years. He was also a student of Grandmaster Isaac "Ike" Kaawa. He joined the Kajukenbo Self-Defense Institute when he befriended Professor Adriano Emperado in the late 1970's.
